Instruction Location
A harmonium or reed organ is a wind instrument in which one hand is used to pump air and the other to play notes in a configuration identical to a modern piano. It creates a dynamic sound that creates the basis for melody mainly in ghazals, bhajans and sufi music.
I started my musical journey at an early age by learning slide guitar as I was told that my hands were too small to hold a Sitar. A couple of years passed, and there were still too small, so my tabla and voice training began. Finally in Grade 5, I started learning Sitar which became my passion in life, before I could realize time had flown and I had graduated with Tabla and Voice from the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and completed a Masters in Sitar from Rajasthan University, Jaipur, India. I was awarded with a gold medal for my achievements while doing my Masters and was offered an Assistant Professor’s position at the University, where I started my teaching career. The best day of my life was when my Guru, Grammy Award winner Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, accepted me as his shishya (disciple). Since then, with his blessings and guidance, I shared my passion by collaborating with many musicians in different countries. I lived in Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, United Arab Emirates, and taught music and performed with many musicians. This exposure allowed me to appreciate world music and learn different stylistic elements from local cultures, an exposure I always cherish. Since 2005, I have been in Edmonton, teaching and Directing the Indian Music Ensemble at the University of Alberta which was brought to life by Dr. Regula Qureshi many years ago.
Some of my recent performance include the Raga Mala Edmonton Concert, University of Alberta World Music Sampler, Concert of Afro Canadian Association , Concert for Ankur Association,Edmonton's Capital EX, Explorations Concerts Series by Glen Halls, Raga Mala Calgary, GWG Piece by Piece Series by Maria Dunn, World Music Concert at Winspear (a joint venture between the University of Alberta and the Ragamala Society of Edmonton).
My Guru, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, is a disciple of the Late Pt. Ravi Shankar, who pioneered the popularization of Indian Music in the West. It is with this inspiration and heritage that in 2013 I started the Indian Music Academy.
Bhuyash is a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and rhythmic ensemble composer hailing from Nepal. He has had an amazing experience of working with international musicians from different background and thus, identifies himself to be a student of different music styles too; something he wishes to pursue academically. He had his Tabla training from Pt. Nishikant Barodekar, Sri S Sai Ram and Sri Samir Dey. He had my vocal training from Smt. Kumudini Mundkur.
A recent graduate of Arts and Cultural Management program at MacEwan University, He has been enriched with the skills he needed to advance his career and broaden his knowledge in every aspect of music events and participation.
He recently finished his internship with CKUA Radio, Edmonton as he had been very much impressed by CKUA's core value i.e. the application of collective expertise to broadcast relevant and engaging music and information programs that educate, challenge and inspire. At CKUA, He attempted at gaining practical knowledge of working for/in an organization that exists to engage the diverse community through Music.
